Background and duty

The Sápmi web portal is intended to reach people of all ages who want to learn more about the Sami people and Sami culture. Our goal is for these pages to provide information and new knowledge to all visitors.

The Sápmi portal was built in 2004 by the Sami Information Centre. The portal spans the whole of Sami society, and visitors will find information about pre-Christian religion, history, language and other topics. In the overview, in the green box in the top right corner, you can look at the structure of the portal in greater detail. However, the portal also includes a great deal more:
  • News function. Every day we check what has been written about the Sami in the Swedish news media.
  • Weather. The weather at three places in Sápmi is updated every hour.
  • Experts. Sami experts in various areas provide answers to tricky questions.
  • Calendar. Events, lectures, exhibitions, sport. You can also tell us about your own Sami events here.
  • Guided tour. Learn about Sami history in a few minutes.
  • Educational and interactive animations about the reindeer husbandry year and parts of the reindeer.
  • Reading tips. Would you like to know more? We can give you advice about the books you can read.
  • Sami words. We give you Sami words in all three dialects, along with an English translation and explanation.
The Sápmi portal has been designed by Ruby Tuesday, and the publishing tool is imCMS from ImCode Partner AB.

Inez Svonni Fjällström is the Editor-in-Chief.

Unless otherwise indicated, all illustrations are by Johnny Dyrander. The reindeer husbandry year and Parts of the reindeer are by Pär-Joel Utsi. The illustration associated with the launch campaign is by Anders Gunnarsson.
