 Background and task

The Sami Information Centre is a national source of knowledge about the Sami people and Sami culture. Our goal is to increase people's knowledge about the Sami as an indigenous people and about Sami affairs. We produce information, initiate information activities, and cooperate with other organizations, associations, museums, schools etc. We are also responsible for the website www.samer.se. The Sami Information Centre is located in Östersund. We are a part of the Sami Parliament, whose main office is situated in Kiruna.

Between 2002 and 2004, the Government ran a national information campaign in order to increase public knowledge about the Sami. As part of this venture, the Sami Parliament was commissioned by the Government to establish a national, permanent Sami Information Centre.
The Sami Information Centre will create a platform for, and take the initiative for, co-operation between various parties working with information about the Sami. Another important task is to form networks between various parties and channels of information, in order to enrich each other and make it easier for the inquisitive to find answers.
The Sami Information Centre was opened on Monday, 29 August 2005 in Östersund.
