The drum
The Sami drum has never been a magic drum. It was given that epithet by missionary priests, whose intention was to eradicate the Sami's pre-Christian religion and the use of the drum.

Crucifix held over a Sami
Forced conversion to Christianity
In 1685 the state decided to convert the Sami to Christianity by force. Cult images (sieidi) and offering places were destroyed, and sacred Sami sites were desecrated.

Drum

Persecuted for their belief
The shaman acted as an intermediary in contacts between the people and the world of gods. When the Sami were to be converted to Christianity, the Church principally directed their persecution at the shaman and his tool, the drum.
