How do the Sami dress today?
For everyday use, the Sami wear clothes they have bought from various shops, just like the rest of the Swedish population. However, they may have details and certain garments that are typically Sami, that have been sewn by hand according to traditional Sami models, or newly designed garments with Sami inspiration.
Reindeer herding Sami wear more traditional clothes as workclothes. For example: kolt, reindeer skin trousers and shoes, gloves and caps made from reindeer skin. Clothes made of reindeer skin, reindeer leg skins and other skins are very warm, flexible garments. |

Are handicrafts today the same as they were 100 years ago?
Handicrafts have always changed over time. People have gained new influences and been inspired by incorporating these in their tradition. Developments in society mean that people's needs have also changed. Sami today no longer require the milking bowl that they needed fifty years ago when they milked their reindeer, but they do need clothes that are better adapted to today's needs. |

How do people learn handicrafts?
Handicraft skills can be learned in the home from parents or grandparents.
However, many people no longer have this opportunity. This may be because their parents are employed outside the home, and they may not live close to their grandparents. In such cases, they have to acquire the knowledge from various institutions such as pre-school, school, university and by attending various courses. The Sami Education Centre in Jokkmokk is one place where people can learn handicrafts. |

What materials are used in Sami handicrafts?
Sami handicrafts mostly use natural materials: broadcloth, frieze, wool, skins, roots and various types of wood, although other materials are used as well. Reindeer antlers are also commonly used. |

What is it like being able to make handicrafts?
Working with living materials, natural materials like skin, antler and wood, is exciting because they have a will of their own. You have to adapt yourself to the material, its appearance and its changes. It is vital to communicate with the material at all times. As a result, all objects are uniquely adapted to each material. |
